The Thandaper Number, Kerala's Quiet Key
Every Kerala landholder has a number they may never have noticed, printed on each year's tax receipt. The thandaper is the village office's account for a person's holdings: one number gathering every parcel they own in the village, carrying the tax assessment, and moving, splitting or closing as land changes hands. Understand it, and half of Kerala's land paperwork explains itself.
What the thandaper number actually is
Definition
The thandaper is the village office's account number for a landholder: a person-level register entry gathering every parcel the holder owns in that village, against which the land tax is assessed and receipts issue. Transfers move parcels between thandapers; successions and partitions split them.
Kerala's records run on two axes, and the thandaper is the second one. The survey number files land by ground; the thandaper files it by person. Ask the first axis and you learn about a parcel; ask the second and you learn about an owner, every holding, every assessment, gathered under one number.
The number's daily work is tax. Kerala assesses land tax thandaper-wise, which is why the receipt, that most ordinary of documents, quietly certifies three things at once: the holder the office recognises, the account their land sits under, and the fact that record and possession still agree this year.
Its lifecycle mirrors the land's. Buy a parcel and pokkuvaravu moves it into your thandaper, opening one if none exists. A death splits or passes the account through succession. A partition births new thandapers from an old one. Reading a family's thandaper history at the village office is reading the family's land history, with the arithmetic already done.

It is on the receipt, in the register, and behind every record entry.

What the thandaper answers
Questions that resolve at the account level, not the parcel level.
| Question | Why the thandaper answers it | Who asks it |
|---|---|---|
| What does this person own here? | The account lists all their parcels | Buyers, heirs, lenders |
| Is the tax position healthy? | Assessment runs account-wise | Banks, careful buyers |
| Did the succession ever happen? | Death shows as an unmoved account | Heirs, their advisers |
| Did my purchase fully land? | The parcel should join your account | Every new owner |
| How did the family's land divide? | Partitions split accounts traceably | Families, courts |
Common thandaper issues, and the fix
Account-level checks surface four situations.
Why buyers and heirs should think in thandapers
Parcel thinking answers the question you asked; account thinking answers the questions you should have.
