The Girdawari: The Field Walk, Written Down
Twice a year, season by season, Rajasthan's Patwaris walk their villages and write down what they find: which khasra grew what, on how much of it, watered how, and who was found cultivating. That written walk is the Girdawari, the state's crop and possession record, and it leads a double life, as the farmer's proof for insurance, procurement and relief, and as the buyer's quiet witness to who actually works the land a nakal says someone else owns.
What the Girdawari records in Rajasthan
Definition
The Girdawari is Rajasthan's seasonal crop record: the Patwari's inspection, khasra by khasra, of what was sown and on what area, the irrigation source, and the person found in cultivation, compiled each kharif and rabi and served through Apna Khata's services. It grounds the state's crop-linked processes, insurance, procurement, relief assessment, and its cultivator entries are the record's answer to the possession question.
For the farming family it is the season's receipt. Insurance claims want the sown crop matching the Girdawari's entry; procurement registrations lean on it; relief after drought or hail is assessed from it. An entry error, the wrong crop, the wrong area, an absent name, costs real money at each of those counters, so the report deserves a check every season while correction through the tehsil is still a small errand rather than a lost claim.
For the buyer it is testimony. A purchase file where the nakal names the seller and the Girdawari's seasons name someone else has surfaced the classic gap, owner on paper, cultivator on the ground, and in a state whose tenancy law gives cultivation history real weight, that gap is a legal question, not a rural curiosity. The resolution, written, lawful, priced into the deal, belongs before the advance.
Read it too as the land's own diary: seasons of fallow that argue with a 'productive farm' pitch, irrigation entries that confirm or contradict the borewell story, area sown that quietly measures how much of the khasra is actually workable. Three or four seasons of Girdawari, read together, describe a property more honestly than any listing.

| Entry | What it shows | Who it matters to |
|---|---|---|
| Crop sown | The season's actual use | Insurance and procurement claims |
| Area sown | How much of the khasra works | Buyers pricing usable land |
| Irrigation source | Watered how, if at all | The borewell story, tested |
| Cultivator found | Who was in the field | Buyers reading possession |
| Fallow seasons | The land resting, or failing | Both, for different reasons |
