Land area measurement in Goa follows GoRT-defined standards. Official metric units — Hectare, Are, and Square Metre — are used in land records. Acre is a customary unit commonly used in property transactions. Guntha is a traditional sub-unit also used in Goa and neighbouring states.
Goa land records use standard metric units — Acre, Hectare, Are, and Square Metre — as defined in the GoRT.
In Goa, the Record of Rights is called Form I & XIV. It is maintained in Konkani.
A Hectare is a standard metric unit of land area equal to 10,000 square metres or 100 ares, as defined in the GoRT.
An Are is a metric sub-unit of hectare, equal to 100 square metres. 100 Ares make 1 Hectare.
The legal framework includes: The Goa, Daman and Diu Land Revenue Code, 1968, The Goa, Daman and Diu Land Revenue (City Survey) Rules, 1969, The Goa, Daman and Diu Agricultural Tenancy Act, 1964 and Rules, 1965.
In Goa, the most commonly used land measurement units are Square Metre and Hectare in official records. Acre and Guntha are widely used in informal property transactions and local dealings.
While Goa was under Portuguese administration until 1961, most Portuguese-era land laws have been replaced or adapted. However, certain aspects of the Portuguese Civil Code relating to property (comunidades, etc.) continue to influence Goa's land tenure system.
