What is Rythu Bandhu?

The Rythu Bandhu Scheme, also known as the Agriculture Investment Support Scheme, is a unique initiative undertaken by the Telangana government to empower farmers and boost agricultural productivity in the state. Launched in 2018, the scheme provides financial assistance directly to farmers to cover their initial investment costs for the farming season.

Each farmer, irrespective of their landholding size, receives an annual financial input of Rs.5,000 per acre per season for the Kharif and Rabi seasons. Hence, remittance is Rs. 10,000 per acre per year. The financial assistance is directly transferred to the bank accounts of eligible farmers through an e-wallet system.

Since there is no definition of a farmer or a non-farmer in the records, anyone who owns agricultural land is considered a farmer under this scheme.

Some argue that the Rythu Banhu Scheme's uniform financial support might not address the diverse needs of all farmers. Differences in landholdings, crops, and expenses can lead to inequities.

Discussions regarding excluding larger farmers from the scheme have been ongoing for some time. However, as of January 2024, no final decision has been reached. The current government has stated that they will make a definitive statement on the matter only after further discussion in the state assembly.
