Question 1

What is the Hasimara Air Funnel Zone and why is this base significant?

Accepted Answer

It is the height restriction corridor around Hasimara Air Force Station in Alipurduar district, a base that guards the Siliguri Corridor and has hosted the Indian Air Force's second Dassault Rafale squadron since 2021.

Question 2

Does Hasimara have a civilian airport or passenger terminal?

Accepted Answer

No. Unlike several other Indian Air Force bases, Hasimara has no civil enclave or passenger operations. It is a purely military installation under Eastern Air Command.

Question 3

What is the exact height formula near Hasimara's runway?

Accepted Answer

Permitted height equals 2 percent of the distance from the runway edge along the approach and departure path, a 1:50 slope, plus a fixed 45 metre cap within 4 km under the Inner Horizontal Surface.

Question 4

Why is Hasimara considered especially strategically sensitive?

Accepted Answer

It protects the roughly 22 km-wide Siliguri Corridor, India's sole land connection to its northeastern states, and hosts Rafale fighters positioned to respond to activity near the Chumbi Valley on the northern frontier.

Question 5

Do I still need an AAI NOC even though there is no civilian airport here?

Accepted Answer

Yes. GSR 751(E) applies nationally within 20 km of any Aerodrome Reference Point, civilian or military, so the standard height clearance requirement still applies, alongside Air Force review given the base's role.

Question 6

Is land near Jaigaon or the Bhutan border subject to extra restrictions?

Accepted Answer

Potentially. Border-town locations near Jaigaon can carry security-related clearance requirements in addition to standard airport height rules, so confirm both separately for any specific plot.

Question 7

Can I build on tea estate land near Hasimara without extra approval?

Accepted Answer

No. Tea garden land in West Bengal carries its own distinct land-holding and transfer restrictions, separate from and in addition to any height NOC requirement tied to the airbase's funnel zone.

Question 8

What happens if a building is constructed near Hasimara without clearance?

Accepted Answer

Unauthorised construction near an active frontline airbase protecting a strategically critical corridor risks demolition orders and denial of occupancy certificates, consistent with enforcement patterns at defence-sensitive sites elsewhere in India.
