Question 1

What is an IAF funnel zone and how does it affect land near Barrackpore?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the funnel zone is the approach and departure corridor aligned with the runway, where the Ministry of Civil Aviation's 2015 Rules cap building height using a 2 percent of distance formula from the runway edge.

Question 2

How is the maximum building height calculated near Barrackpore Air Force Station?

Accepted Answer

Within the funnel zone, permitted height equals 2 percent of the distance from the runway edge. A plot 1,000 metres away, for example, carries an approximate 20 metre height cap under this formula.

Question 3

Is the Barrackpore funnel zone the same as Kolkata airport's height restriction zone?

Accepted Answer

No, these are separate aerodromes. Kolkata's civil airport generates its own 11 to 20 kilometre restriction bands, while Barrackpore Air Force Station generates a distinct military zone under the same central rules.

Question 4

Can I build a two-storey house near Barrackpore Air Force Station?

Accepted Answer

Yes, within the traditional inner zone, since a two-storey cap has historically applied close to aerodromes, but exact clearance still depends on precise distance and direction from the runway centreline.

Question 5

Which municipalities are affected by aerodrome height restrictions near Barrackpore?

Accepted Answer

The AAI's 2025 directive named Bidhannagar, North Dumdum, Madhyamgram, and New Barrackpore for the civil airport's extended zone. Localities immediately around Barrackpore Cantonment face the military base's separate restrictions.

Question 6

Do trees also count under funnel zone restrictions?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the 2015 Rules restrict any tree likely to grow taller than the specified height limit for that zone, in addition to structures, applying the same height table used for construction.

Question 7

Can a funnel zone restriction be legally reduced or challenged?

Accepted Answer

In some cases, yes. A Gurgaon-area IAF restricted zone was reduced from 900 to 300 metres after a High Court petition and technical committee review found the smaller radius still maintained adequate safety margins.

Question 8

Where do I apply for height clearance near a defense aerodrome?

Accepted Answer

Civil airport clearance runs through AAI's online digital review process, but a military aerodrome like Barrackpore typically requires a separate application through defence clearance channels rather than the civil portal alone.
