Question 1

Is Bihta Air Force Station becoming a civil airport?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a New Civil Enclave was approved in August 2024 at an estimated Rs. 1,413 crore, designed to serve as Patna's second airport alongside the existing Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport.

Question 2

How big will the new Bihta civil enclave terminal be?

Accepted Answer

The approved terminal spans 66,000 square metres, initially designed for 3,000 peak-hour passengers and 50 lakh passengers annually, with capacity plans reaching one crore passengers per year eventually.

Question 3

When will the Bihta airport terminal be completed?

Accepted Answer

Construction of the passenger terminal building began in June 2025, with completion targeted for April 2027, following the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Modi in May 2025.

Question 4

Does Bihta's expansion mean its funnel zone will grow?

Accepted Answer

The project includes a Category-II Instrument Landing System and infrastructure for larger aircraft, which typically requires a larger, more formally defined restricted zone than the base needed as a purely military airfield.

Question 5

How does the Danapur-Bihta elevated road connect to the airport project?

Accepted Answer

This separate 25 km NHAI project links Bihta toward Patna and had land acquisition substantially complete by late 2024, with construction targeting September 2026 completion, ahead of the airport terminal itself.

Question 6

What was Bihta Air Force Station used for historically?

Accepted Answer

During World War II, the British Army used it to assemble and test-fly Waco Hadrian combat gliders. The IAF's No. 6 Care and Maintenance Unit has operated there continuously since 1964.

Question 7

Will Bihta eventually replace Patna's existing airport?

Accepted Answer

It is designed to relieve, not necessarily fully replace, the existing Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport, which currently operates near its roughly 3 million passenger annual capacity with limited room to expand.

Question 8

Do I need a No Objection Certificate to build near Bihta right now?

Accepted Answer

Almost certainly, given both the long-standing military zone and the actively forming civil aviation restrictions tied to the new terminal and landing system still under construction through 2027.
