Question 1

Does Tambaram Air Force Station have civilian flights?

Accepted Answer

It has no IATA code and carries no scheduled civilian air traffic today, though plans exist to potentially use it for smaller ATR aircraft to decongest Chennai's main civil airport.

Question 2

Is Tambaram the same airport as Chennai's main civil airport?

Accepted Answer

No, they are entirely separate aerodromes. Chennai's main civil airport is Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam, covered under its own distinct funnel zone layer, separate from this Tambaram military airfield.

Question 3

Could Tambaram become Chennai's alternative airport now that Parandur is scrapped?

Accepted Answer

Potentially in a limited way. With the Parandur Greenfield Airport project dropped in July 2026, Tambaram's proposed role handling smaller ATR aircraft becomes one of the few remaining capacity-relief ideas, though it remains unconfirmed.

Question 4

What is Tambaram Air Force Station's primary role?

Accepted Answer

Training pilots as Qualified Flying Instructors and running a Mechanical Training Institute for airmen, alongside hosting an An-32 transport squadron and supporting Indian Navy helicopter operations.

Question 5

What height restrictions apply to land near Tambaram Air Force Station?

Accepted Answer

Construction near the base requires a separate Airforce Station Defense Clearance process, distinct from the civil NOCAS system used for Chennai's main airport, tailored to the base's military operational requirements.

Question 6

Does the Indian Navy also use Tambaram Air Force Station?

Accepted Answer

Yes, alongside its core Indian Air Force training role and resident An-32 transport squadron, helicopters from the Indian Navy have also operated from this airfield.

Question 7

Was Tambaram's runway ever lengthened?

Accepted Answer

A 2017 Indian Air Force proposal aimed to lengthen the runway to accommodate larger aircraft for natural disaster response support, though confirmed completion status of this specific upgrade was not found in available reporting.

Question 8

Do I need a No Objection Certificate to build near Tambaram?

Accepted Answer

Very likely, through the separate Airforce Station Defense Clearance process rather than Chennai's civil NOCAS system, given the base's active multi-service military training and transport operations.
