Question 1

Is Bidar Air Force Station open to civilian visitors?

Accepted Answer

No, the base is explicitly not open to the public, reflecting its status as an active Indian Air Force Training Command installation rather than a general-access facility.

Question 2

What makes Bidar's flight activity different from other IAF bases?

Accepted Answer

Its sheer volume. Bidar flies 60 to 90 sorties per day, generating the highest number of single-engine flying hours in India, making its airspace far busier than most bases of comparable size.

Question 3

Did Bidar's runway expansion in 2011 change its restricted zone?

Accepted Answer

Very likely, yes. The runway was extended to 9,000 feet to accommodate faster Hawk trainer aircraft, which typically requires a correspondingly extended approach and departure funnel for safety.

Question 4

What height restrictions apply to land near Bidar Air Force Station?

Accepted Answer

Construction near the base falls under both civil aviation height restriction rules and a Ministry of Defence security-driven restricted zone, given the base's Training Command status and high sortie frequency.

Question 5

Does Bidar Airport have commercial flights?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a small civil enclave operates alongside the military base, currently served by Star Air with flights to Bengaluru, subject to its own separate civil aviation height clearance requirements.

Question 6

Why does Bidar see such high daily sortie volume?

Accepted Answer

It hosts the second biggest pilot training centre in India, where Air Force Academy graduates complete advanced Hawk aircraft training before joining combat units, driving continuous daily flight activity.

Question 7

Do I need a No Objection Certificate to build near Bidar Air Force Station?

Accepted Answer

Very likely, given the base's high-frequency training operations and its 2011 runway extension, both of which point toward a meaningful and likely expanded restricted zone requiring formal clearance.

Question 8

Is Bidar Air Force Station a combat base or training base?

Accepted Answer

It is a training base, historically home to the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team and currently housing Hawk Operational Training Squadrons that prepare pilots for eventual assignment to frontline combat units.
