Question 1

What is the Vikhroli-Kopar Khairane Link Road and which areas does it connect?

Accepted Answer

It is a proposed six-lane, 7.5 to 10 km bridge connecting Vikhroli in Mumbai's eastern suburbs to Kopar Khairane in Navi Mumbai, crossing Thane Creek and terminating on Thane-Belapur Road.

Question 2

Why has this project historically faced delays?

Accepted Answer

The original alignment ran through the Kanjurmarg dumping ground, but officials determined an elevated structure could not be built there because the garbage heap can rise up to 35 metres, forcing a redesign and a construction delay of over a year while awaiting municipal approval.

Question 3

What is the Kanjurmarg salt pan land dispute and how does it affect this corridor?

Accepted Answer

The Centre and Maharashtra state government have disputed ownership of roughly 5,500 acres of salt pan land in the eastern suburbs, including Kanjurmarg, since the 1980s, an unresolved conflict that affects land status throughout the corridor's vicinity.

Question 4

Has a court ever ruled on the status of land near Kanjurmarg?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Bombay High Court declared 119.91 hectares of the 141.77-hectare Kanjurmarg landfill a "protected forest" following an NGO petition, and separately stayed a land transfer for an unrelated Metro-3 car shed project on the same salt pan land pending the Centre's title claim.

Question 5

Why does this bridge need central environmental clearance?

Accepted Answer

Its alignment crosses Thane Creek, which encompasses ecologically sensitive areas including the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary zone, requiring approval from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Question 6

How much will the Vikhroli-Kopar Khairane Link Road cost?

Accepted Answer

Estimates range from Rs 550 crore to Rs 1,200 crore for the six-lane, freeway-grade bridge.

Question 7

When was this project formally approved?

Accepted Answer

It was approved in 2025 as the fourth bridge across Thane Creek, following the earlier Vashi, Airoli, and Kalwa bridges, though a specific public completion timeline had not been announced as of the most recent reporting.

Question 8

Which existing Thane Creek bridges does this new link supplement?

Accepted Answer

It supplements the Vashi Bridge connecting Mankhurd to Vashi, the Airoli Bridge connecting Mulund to Airoli, and the Kalwa Bridge connecting Thane to Kalwa.
